Washing jackets and coats starts with the care label and garment construction, rather than a universal machine setting. Down, wool, membranes and linings respond differently to water, movement and heat.
Check the complete garment
Empty pockets, detach removable accessories and note existing stains or wear. Read the laundry care symbols for the finished item. The outer fabric alone does not tell you how its filling, adhesives or lining should be treated.
| Item | Essential check | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Down jacket | Permitted washing and drying methods | Storing it while the filling remains damp |
| Membrane jacket | Manufacturer's care instructions | Automatically adding fabric softener |
| Structured coat | Lining, reinforcement and finish | Choosing a cycle solely because the outer fabric is wool |
When home washing is allowed
Close fastenings, protect parts that may snag and select the programme specified by the maker. The garment needs space to move: squeezing a jacket into a drum does not mean the machine has adequate capacity. Use a suitable product at the stated dose, without improvised cleaning mixtures.
Treat drying as a separate decision
Check the drying instructions separately. A washable item is not necessarily suitable for tumble drying. With filled garments, inspect thick sections and seams before storage. A dry surface does not establish that the inside is dry. Our guide to storing clothes explains preparation between seasons.
When professional assessment helps
Structured coats, missing labels, leather trim and old stains warrant assessment before treatment. SPG's garment turnaround is 48–72 hours; the suitable service is determined during assessment. See professional garment care.
Frequently asked questions
Can every jacket be washed at 30°C?
No. A low temperature does not remove risks from agitation, filling, adhesives or drying. Start with the item's care instructions.
Can I dry a coat on a radiator?
Avoid direct contact with a heat source. Use the drying method allowed by the manufacturer and let the garment dry completely before covering it.
