Sort by fibre and finish

Separate whites from colours that might transfer and check pillowcases, sheets and duvet covers individually. Satin describes a fabric construction, not one particular fibre; cotton instructions do not automatically apply to silk. Close cover fastenings and remove anything trapped inside.

A five-step washing routine

  1. Read the laundry care symbols and inspect stains.
  2. Spot-treat only with a compatible product, tested discreetly first.
  3. Leave movement space in the drum; crowded textiles are harder to wash and rinse.
  4. Dose detergent according to the packaging, load and water conditions.
  5. Remove bedding promptly and unfold it before drying.

Drying, ironing and rotation

Follow the tumble-drying or line-drying instructions. Open corners and check thick hems before putting a set away. If ironing is permitted, choose that temperature separately rather than copying the wash temperature.

Keep a clean spare set and rotate use. Set a changing routine around use, perspiration and soiling, replacing visibly dirty bedding promptly. A strong fragrance does not demonstrate hygiene.

When bedding becomes a bulky load

The cover and the filling have different care needs. With duvets and pillows, assess equipment capacity and complete drying separately. Avoid packing an entire bed's textiles into one cycle just to finish sooner.

Frequently asked questions

Should all bedding be washed at 60°C?

Not automatically. Follow the label and any specific hygiene requirements; an unsuitable temperature can damage fabric or finishes.

Why does freshly washed bedding smell damp?

Check how long it remained in the machine, the load size and the drying process. If it keeps happening, review machine maintenance against the manual.
