Cleaning upholstery at home should follow the furniture manufacturer's instructions, not just the fabric's appearance. The cover, backing and filling can have different compatibility limits.
Before applying water
Find the label or model manual and check whether covers can be removed and washed. A zip may exist for assembly without making the cover washable. Ask the manufacturer if instructions are missing before wetting a large area.
Remove dust with a suitable attachment and inspect seams. Test an allowed product discreetly and let the test area dry so you can assess colour or texture changes.
Handling a mark
Blot rather than scrub. Apply a controlled amount as instructed and avoid soaking the filling. A ring after drying may relate to uneven moisture distribution; repeatedly wetting the same patch is not automatically the answer.
Identify whether the mark came from a drink, grease or another substance. See stain identification, but do not transfer washable-clothing instructions directly to a sofa.
Know the limits
Stop if colour transfers, distortion appears or moisture persists. Mould or contamination calls for specialist assessment rather than surface fragrance. Do not mix cleaners.
This guide explains furniture care; it does not advertise an SPG home upholstery-cleaning service. Confirm acceptance and drop-off arrangements separately for removable textiles and rugs.
Frequently asked questions
Does a zip mean the cover is washable?
Only the product instructions can confirm removal and washing. A zip alone does not establish either.
Does more water mean better cleaning?
No. It can wet hidden layers and prolong drying. Follow the method specified for the furniture.
