Organising laundry in a flat: space and routine

Organising laundry in a flat works when drying is planned alongside washing. Another cycle is not helpful when every available drying surface is already occupied.

Map the route

Decide where used laundry collects, where sorting happens and where clean items go. Even in a small home, avoid using one pile for every stage. Separate damp clothing before enclosing it in a basket.

In a shared flat, agree who unloads the machine and clears drying space. A simple task list helps prevent forgotten loads.

Build compatible loads

Check care labels, not just colour. Group items by their requirements and the programme's capacity. Do not add a bulky item merely to fill space; duvets and pillows need separate drying consideration.

Keep detergent in its original packaging, as instructed and out of children's reach. Do not transfer it into containers that resemble food or drink packaging.

Plan the drying stage

Space items without unnecessary overlap and follow their drying instructions. Monitor room dampness and ventilate appropriately for the home. Avoid covering heaters with garments unsuited to that drying method.

If volume exceeds available space, split loads across days or consider a laundry collection for eligible items.

Frequently asked questions

Will a bigger basket solve the backlog?

Not by itself. Washing frequency, drying capacity and separation of clean and used items all matter.

Should everything be washed on one day?

Only if you can also dry it correctly. Plan through to folding and storage, not just the machine cycle.
