Washing delicate clothes requires assessing the whole item: fibre, colour, seams and trims. A programme labelled delicate does not guarantee compatibility with every silk blouse, jumper or embellished dress.
Start with the label
Check washing, drying and ironing separately. If water washing is prohibited, hand washing is not an automatic exception. Ask the maker or request professional assessment when instructions are missing.
For wool, Woolmark's guidance allows machine washing where the garment's label permits it. Choose a wool-suitable detergent; this does not automatically make the same product appropriate for every delicate fibre.
When washing is permitted
Separate colours and avoid loads with abrasive items or exposed fastenings. Use the stated dose of a compatible product instead of mixing detergent, bleach and stain remover. A mesh bag may reduce snagging but cannot change the label's restrictions.
Do not soak an item by habit. Check whether soaking is allowed and avoid scrubbing stained areas. Read the stain guide before local treatment of difficult marks.
Drying can change the shape
A heavy wet garment may stretch when supported poorly. Follow its drying instructions rather than hanging every knitted item. Let it dry fully before storage.
Frequently asked questions
Is hand washing always gentler?
No. Rubbing, twisting and prolonged soaking can be harsh. The method must follow the garment's instructions.
What if colour changes during a patch test?
Stop. Colour transfer is a reason to request assessment, not to extend treatment over the entire surface.
